The holidays are so refreshing for me personally. I go... go and go all year long but really chill out around Thanksgiving and Christmas. What is it about these holidays that bring everything to a halt? That urgent deadline or that "must do" kind of slips onto the back burner. However, when the holidays are over it all starts back up again. How do you take the relaxation of the holiday back into the normalcy of your life?
As I think about this, I wonder if my being a man plays a factor in this. The reason why I say this is because men usually do less of the holiday preparations which is typically where the stress comes from. Women typically carry the full load and the brunt of the stress... Do you agree? Here's an article that does mention that heart attacks are up during the holidays. Anyway, I'm trying to make 2008 a year of productivity but also chilling! Let's share some tips.

My tip? Simple. Just lighten up. Some people put way too much pressure on themselves to make their homes look like the cover of a Martha Stewart Living magazine. Of course they don't remember that Martha has professional photographers, cooks, food stylists, set decorators, nannies to watch any kids, beautiful models and non-lived in sets -- and an army of people to clean up afterward!
I'm not trying to have a heart attack just so the stockings can be hung by the chimney with care. Give me some pop corn, a Christmas Story rerun, some hot chocolate with marshmallows and my kids smiling in my lap. That's decoration enough for me, and I think that's how Jesus would like for us to celebrate His birthday. Just enjoy the Gift, and chill.
